Services

The Berger Learning Group offers a variety of services at our center, in schools, at home and within the community. Individualized programs are designed to meet your child's specific needs including, but not limited to:

1:1 ABA/VB instruction

Individualized skills are taught and reinforced through both discrete trial (DTT) and natural environment teaching (NET) at our center. Cognitive skills, language/communication, play skills and social skills are addressed and strengthened through one-to-one ABA instruction with an emphasis on verbal behavior (VB). Age-appropriate self-help skills such as toileting, dressing, self-feeding and personal hygiene along with management of problem behaviors are also incorporated into each child’s unique program.

Social skills groups

Through our Buddies Social Programs we offer social skills groups focusing on age-appropriate social behaviors from toddlers to young adults. From increased eye contact and interactive play to initiating and maintaining conversations with peers, our Buddies practice these skills as well as many others through a variety of fun activities. Social goals specific to each child are identified and then targeted during each group. Goals are modified or added as progress is made.

Parent training

BLG believes that parent training is key to the success of any ABA program. For parents and caregivers, every moment is a teaching moment and a learning opportunity for their child. We feel it is important to empower parents and caregivers so they can effectively implement behavioral strategies to decrease problem behavior and significantly improve and increase appropriate behaviors.

BLG staff provides behavioral support to assist children with appropriate classroom behavior, pragmatic language, play skills and social skills within the school or camp environment. Our focus is providing the right amount of support while promoting independence.

School consultations

School consultations vary based on parental concerns, school recommendations and the child’s specific needs. We work with families and school districts in determining the appropriateness of a school placement or the function of disruptive behaviors at school. Schools and families may request a consultation to assist in determining the function of disruptive behaviors at school (see Functional Behavioral Assessment).

Functional Behavioral Assessments &
Behavior Intervention Plans

In order to effectively address challenging behaviors, a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) is conducted and a positive behavior intervention plan (BIP) created for implementation at school and/or home. These may be requested by families or by schools who have a child that presents with a specific challenging behavior such as tantrums, aggression, self-injury, etc. BLG staff can assist with proper implementation of the behavior plan through training to caregivers and/or staff to promote consistency with implementation across people and environments (generalization).

Workshops / Staff training

BLG conducts workshops and in-service trainings on a variety of behavioral topics for both school staff and parents including managing challenging behaviors, using picture activity schedules, introduction to verbal behavior, working with families with special needs, etc.

Assessments

At the beginning of each child’s ABA program, a comprehensive assessment is completed to determine areas of strength and weakness and these results serve as the basis of a child’s individualized ABA program. Assessments that may be used include, but are not limited to, the Assessment
of Basic Language and Learning Skills – Revised (ABLLS-R), the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) and/or the Vineland~3 (for older children). Schools and families may also request assessments be conducted for individual students.
